Art Against Terrorism exhibition from 3rd of April 2009 till 18th April 2009

March 9th, 2009

Violence is the most archaic form of human expression and existence. The early man perpetrates violence on Nature for the benefit of his own existence. This was the beginning of the conflict between Man and Nature. As civilization progressed, man learned ills of violence, but still continued in some form or other. As things stand now the early conflict between man and nature, has changed into MAN v/s MAN, CIVILIZATION v/s CIVILIZATION, RACE v/s RACE, CASTE v/s CASTE, RELIGION v/s RELIGION, etc. One can give many names to this violence, to the extent that it can be labeled as Terrorism. The revolutions, wars, terrorism all use force to achieve their goals, but the devastation it leaves behind makes permanent scars on the human, political, psychological, economical, and social psyche . There are multiple effects of this devastation in every field of human activities including artists. How do we respond to such situations? There are art historical examples, were artists responding immediately/instantaneously and sometimes much later, when everything seems to have sunk in. Similarly the representation of such situation have varied and will vary, the technique and language of such representations can be as broad as possible.

Emami Chisel Art along with nine other galleries in Kolkata has decided to put up shows on the question of Terrorism/Violence in our lives. As an artist, one can go down the memory lane and retrieve old wounds/scares or to the immediate past to articulate our hopes, fears, anxieties, despairs, etc.
